Mrs Birks eats street food

I have finally eaten Street Food!  Obviously that sounds incredibly uncool for those who eat Street Food all the time or for those who have the sort of job where Street Food for lunch is the norm.  For me and Mr B it was something of a novelty and we enjoyed it very much.

On a quick trip into London recently, we visited Spitalfields Market.  It seemed a real mix of traditional shops and stalls and completely unaffordable shops and stalls.  It made for a colourful and exciting atmosphere providing lots of opportunities for people watching.  As well as having lots of nice chains to eat at, there were lots of yummy looking food vans, with food from across the globe.  The smells from some of the vans was amazing and the queues were testament to the quality of the food.  For my first taste of street food, I opted for The Duck Truck - a company which specialises in guess what? Duck!  I had a traditional duck salad for £7 which was delicious.  It was very generous with the amount of duck and came with Asian Slaw and pomegranate.  The service was quick and friendly and I was really pleased with my choice.

Mr B had a Philly Cheesesteak with fries - a fine chopped steak, grilled onions and melted cheese - from The Liberty Cheesesteak Company.  It seemed a strange idea to me but, having tried a few bites, I can confirm it was yummy.

We ate our chosen food sat on a kerb in the sunshine.  It all felt very much like being on holiday (if you could ignore the Deliveroos whizzing around)

For pudding - because why wouldn't you when surrounded by so many delicious treats? - we both had a doughnut from Crosstown doughnuts.  At £3.50 per doughnut, they're a bit spendy for a Norfolk couple but they are made from a "hybrid sour dough" and have a range of handmade fillings and toppings.  We chose a Creme Brûlée and a Peanut Butter Berry and shared both.  I can't decide which was my favourite - probably the peanut one which, when you got a bite of everything, was heavenly!

So there's a new experience at the age of 41, proving that you're never too old to eat duck and doughnuts on a street corner in London.
