Crafty Creatives Box 63

It is a long time since I subscribed to the Crafty Creatives boxes, mainly because I was struggling to craft and commit to my full time job (I know which I'd rather do!).  So it was with excitement that I jumped at the chance to review a subscription box when I saw the opportunity on Twitter.  The boxes have changed since I last received one but I was still full of excitement when I saw the following tape on a big brown package.


What spoilt the surprise of what was inside was the other picture on the box which revealed the kit inside.  I say spoilt but of course it didn't really, I was excited to see what the little felt creatures would look like and what the kit would contain.  Plus who can be disappointed with craft stuff arriving through the post and with the added bonus that everything you need is inside, with nice clear designs.


I started the kit a few days later at 'Craft Club' - our attempt at work to relax and catch up once a week during lunchtime.  Everyone liked the look of the kit and loved the idea of a craft subscription service which is of course, the genius of Crafty Creatives.  I finished the cute mushroom fairly quickly and to add an even more autumnal feel, added some dried lavender whilst stuffing (a donation from another Craft Club member).  I realise lavender is considered a bit of an 'old lady' smell but apparently it is very good for aiding sleep, so the finished garland might end up in a bedroom.


Unfortunately, after stuffing the mushroom I realised that I had forgotten to attach the ribbon for hanging it onto the garland, which was a bit frustrating.  However, I will probably stitch it to the back of the mushroom or make more of a feature of it by adding a bow.

Overall CCBox 63 is a cute, quick and satisfyingly do-able kit.  The felt is of nice quality and the animal designs are different to other images you might find online.  I felt the embroidery floss was not as good quality, it was quite hard to separate into strands and knotted easily but there was a generous amount of stuffing and I enjoyed the task - I do love a bit of blanket stitch!  I will definitely be re-subscribing to Crafty Creatives , although I am tempted to have a look at the PaperHaul or BeadHaul boxes - who knows I might have a go at all three!  Of course before then, the Christmas box will be out, so I'll be putting my name down for that sharpish!

Princess Biscuits

You might have guessed by now that I love to bake.  I enjoy all sorts of baking and often try to challenge myself with something new (I have been in training for the Bake Off for about a million years - I hope they pick me one day!).  Joining the WI recently has given me more reasons to bake and more people to eat my baked goods - there's only so much a family of four can get through, especially when one of the four is only 10 months old! Mr Birks has Cancer

I haven't posted on my blog for quite some time and it's not just because of my usual tardiness.  I usually post about nice things on here, things I enjoy, things that make me happy but since my husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer it has been hard to find anything that brings me joy. When my husband told me that he had found a lump, my first reaction was 'I hope it's not cancer'.  His Mum and Dad both died of cancer a few years previously and within one year of each other, so in our family cancer means death.  No survivors, no fighters who have won, just beautiful people that have left us too early.  When he went for his second biopsy, I knew it was cancer.  By this time, my optimism that it could be something else had disappeared and I was beginning to think through practicalities - How would he cope with treatment?  How would he eat?  How would he talk?  Even with our experiences of cancer, I still hadn't faced the idea that he might die.  He's 48

Christmas Bakes 2012

At the moment I'm on maternity leave so I've got more time then most to get stuck into making stuff.  That said, I always find myself in a making mood at Christmas time and baking in particular gets me feeling festive.  This year I tried a range of new stuff although I didn't take pictures of everything. Firstly, I made mince pies using  this recipe .  I'm not a great lover of mince pies usually but this recipe by Nigella is fantastic.  Rather than being too traditionally "fruity" this recipe is heavy on the cranberries and gives a different flavour.  I loved the fact that they weren't too sweet, just deliciously tangy.  The pastry is a bit of a faff (in and out of the fridge and the freezer) but it's worth it.  Overall these were a big hit - perhaps too much of a hit with me - I couldn't stop eating them!
